The Volkswagen Golf, an icon of the Wolfsburg car manufacturer, was introduced in 1974 and immediately became a success. The first series (1974–1983) scored with sought-after technical features of the time, such as a water-cooled front engine, front-wheel drive, and a robust yet functional body. Particularly, the excellent price-performance ratio significantly contributed to its success. At the IAA 1975, the sporty Golf GTI was presented with a 1.6-liter engine and 110 HP. Just a year later, mass production began, and the GTI achieved impressive sales figures worldwide within two months.
